Kym Rupeiks’ Shifting Winds Offers a Powerful Framework and Healing Insights To Support Families Facing Addiction
Kym Rupeiks’ Shifting Winds offers a pathway for awareness, compassion and healing for individuals or family members battling addiction.

Millions of lives are lost to addiction every year, causing more direct and indirect deaths than any other illness as well as downstream suffering in many ways. Shifting Winds: Life with an Addict, Finding a PATH Forward by Kym Rupeiks gives readers an uncompromising look at the painful descent and healing of a woman who witnesses alcoholism progressively take hold of her husband, and the impact this has on both of their lives. Starting at the end of their thirty-nine-year relationship, the book explores the mental, emotional and physical impacts of being an addict, examining the root cause of how an addiction starts and the life events that help perpetuate it. With honesty, empathy and raw self-awareness, Rupeiks creatively turns this investigation into a lesson of personal awareness, taking readers down a PATH of understanding: partnership, anger, tolerance and healing.

I wanted to help readers understand the life cycle of living with an alcoholic and the behavioral changes the alcoholic and the family members both experience,” says author Kym Rupeiks. In the book, Rupeiks is brutally honest about the mistakes she made in her compassionate quest to support her partner, including her contributions to the dance. She also provides well-researched information about the behaviors and dynamics of alcoholics as they function within a family environment. In writing Shifting Winds, her goal was to help readers gain self-awareness as a way to rediscover their own peace and happiness. “Through my personal story of being married to an alcoholic, I offer the reader a PATH of empowerment through enhanced awareness and resources to choose to live with, or detach with love from, their family member who suffers from addiction.”

After reading Shifting Winds, readers will understand the four phases of alcoholism and the behavioral changes associated with each phase. While friends or family members often resort to methods of trying to change an addict’s behavior, Rupeiks reiterates that instead of taking responsibility for the addict’s behavior, each individual must first take responsibility for themselves. Through impactful stories, quoted research and resources, readers will have the opportunity to reflect and free themselves from the caretaking, helping, fixing or controlling behaviors they may have exhibited in the past. What Rupeiks shares will not only significantly impact the lives of numerous family members and partners of alcoholics or those with other addictions, but those who themselves suffer with addictive behaviors as well.

Shifting Winds has been endorsed by some of the most well-renowned experts, authors, and reviewers around the world. Book Excellence writes, “This book showcases the inspiring, hopeful and powerful journey of an intelligent, warm and loving woman as she tries to battle against the internal demons that envelope her husband and tear him away from her.
